Biography
Musician · Songwriter · Composer · Producer
Leo Lazar is a Hamburg-based musician, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, composer, arranger and producer. His main instrument is the drums, but his musical work goes far beyond that. He develops songs, writes and arranges music, produces recordings and works on musical concepts for bands, artists and audiovisual projects.
Early years
His musical training began at an early age with the drums. As a teenager, he became a member of the Landesjugendorchester Schleswig-Holstein and won several prizes at “Jugend musiziert”, Germany’s national youth music competition, including first prize at the national level in solo percussion. From 2003 to 2006, he studied drums, piano and singing at the Hamburg School of Music. The school now lists him as a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, arranger and producer.
Songwriting
An important stage in Lazar’s development as a songwriter was the Hamburg band Ruben Cossani, which he founded with Michel van Dyke and Konrad Wissmann. The trio developed their songs together and released several albums and singles. Lazar was active not only as a drummer, but also as a singer and contributor to the songwriting process.
Lazar also writes songs for other artists. His released songwriting credits include “Call Out the Sun” for Roman Lob, which he co-wrote with Duncan Townsend and Daniel Stroyanov, and “King Kong” by The Baseballs, on which he is credited as Composer & Lyricist.
Production
Alongside this, Lazar developed his work as a producer and arranger. He is a co-founder of the Hamburg studio 106Hz, where he works on his own and collaborative music productions. He has a long-standing collaboration with singer-songwriter Joel Havea. As a member of the Joel Havea Trio, Lazar contributed not only drums and vocals but also to the musical development and production of various releases. Songs were developed, arranged and recorded together in the studio.
Film
Another focus of his work is composing for audiovisual projects. Lazar composed the music for the feature film “Eivissa”. The resulting Original Motion Picture Soundtrack was released through 106Hz and comprises more than 40 compositions. This brings together Lazar’s experience as a musician and producer with extensive work composing for film.
Children’s music theatre
Since 2018, Leo Lazar has been musical director of the successful children’s music theatre project “Eule findet den Beat”. In this role, he combines musical quality with particular educational value: children are playfully introduced to different musical styles, instruments and forms of expression and encouraged to discover music for themselves, listen and explore their creativity.
Live
He has also worked with numerous artists and projects from different musical fields, including Saint Lu, KRIS and Duncan Townsend. His work spans pop, rock, soul, jazz, singer-songwriter music, theatre and film music.
Since 2024, Leo Lazar has been the drummer for Stoppok.
Team building
Alongside his work as a musician, Lazar has also worked internationally as a musical team-building coach for many years. He uses music as a tool for communication, creativity and collaboration.
Approach
Leo Lazar sees himself not solely as a drummer, but as a versatile musical creator. His work ranges from songwriting, composition, arrangement and production to live performance. He combines different international and cultural influences and genres with a clear interest in sonic diversity and continued development.
